Blog from Alexandria Purnell

During this trip, I have reconnected with my history. As a black person, I have already learned about civil rights through the stories of my elder family members. My great grandmother was born in Arkansas in 1932, so she lived through the period of Jim Crow. However, this is the first time that I have ever came to a southern state. Montgomery has expanded my knowledge and have allowed me to feel what my ancestors have experienced. Going through the EJI museum made me feel deep sadness as I walked through the slavery and lynching exhibits. But being inside of Dr. King's house in Montgomery was the perfect way to end the trip as I felt at peace.
